ROURKELA- MECCA OF WESTERN ODISHA

Rourkela is a planned city located in the northern part of the Indian state of Odisha. It is the third largest city in Odisha. It is situated about 340 kilometres (211 mi) north of state capital Bhubaneswar and is surrounded by a range of hills and encircled by rivers. The city is also popularly known as Ispat Nagar and also as the Steel City of Odisha. It has one of the largest steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) known as Rourkela Steel Plant. It also has one of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT Rourkela) of the country. The city has been selected as smart city in the third phase of smart city list on 20 September 2016. Among all the 27 city list Rourkela ranked 12th position on merit basic. Rourkela Day is celebrated on 3 March every year. Rourkela was declared India's Fastest Moving City.

Other than New Bus stand, there are number of ticket booking counters in different parts of Rourkela Town for the public to book tickets for destinations. The Steel City is well connected through Railway from Howrah & Mumbai. Apart from this the city is directly connected with Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Secunderabad, Ahmedabad, Ranchi, Dhanbad & Pune too.

Air Port

Time to time some of the important dignitaries and VVIPs boarding flights are landing here but so far the regular flight has not flying from this air strip for public conveyance.  Govt. of India is on for using it for public purpose, specially when many low cost operators are operating from small towns.

Popular Tourist Attractions

The garden was renovated and inaugurated by the chief minister, the late Chandan of Orissa. The Hanuman statue was built by Sri Lakshman Swami of Hyderabad. The height of the statue is 75 feet. Every year on 23 February it celebrates its foundation day. Other temples inside the premises are 12 Jyotirlingas, Batta Mangala Devi, Sarala Devi Temple, Jagannath Temple, Lakshmi, and Santoshi Mata Temple. One Kalyan Mandap is built to accommodate public gatherings and functions. The newly established Sai Baba temple has become the favorite of the devotees, the idol of which is very similar to the idol of the one situated in Shirdi Sai Baba.

VEDAVYAS-

The name coined after the great sage Vyashadeva who wrote the great epic Mahabharat. It is situated 13 km away from Rourkela Railway Station and Rourkela New Bus Stand. The place has of immense importance because it is situated in the side of confluence of three rivers Sankha, Koel and underground Saraswati with the creation of Brahmani River. The name Brahmani coined after the great sage and Brahman Vyasha Dev. A cave that existed in the riverbank hill which still exists called as Vyasha cave. It is believed the sage Vyasha Deva was living in the said cave and wrote the great epic Mahabharat. Due to soil erosion the said cave is now inaccessible. It also believed that an underground tunnel was there between the river and cave by which the sage used to worship the god without the knowledge of general public.

MANDIRA DAM

The reservoir offers boating facilities for tourists and the nearest railway station is located in Kansbahal on the Howrah-Mumbai main line of South Eastern Railway. Rourkela is the closest junction station. The dam can be reached from Kansbahal and Rourkela by two wheeler, private cars, taxis, auto rickshaws and irregular bus service.[4]

VAISHNODEVI TEMPLE ( replica of Vaishnodevi Temple )

Vaishnodevi Temple at Rourkela is a replica of the original Temple of Vaishnodevi of Jammu (Trikuta Hills) and is situated on the top of the Durgapur Hill facing towards Rourkela Steel Plant. Bhairabanath Temple is situated near Vaishodevi Temple on the hill.
In 2007, the Temple of Goddess Durga, located on the top of the hill, was opened for visitors. During Durga Puja, in the spring and autumn seasons, the Navaratri Festival is celebrated, hundreds of Hindu worshipers come here.

Indira Gandhi Park (IG Park)

The Indira Gandhi Park, located about 2kms from the city center in sector 4 on the main ring road, is the largest park in Orissa. Sprawl over an area of 42 acres of land the well maintained park with beautiful garden and grass meadow houses a mini zoo, aquarium, doll museum and a lake. The garden in the IG Park comprises different varieties of flowing plant, rose garden, Japanese garden and a fountain. 
The mini zoo in the park is the home to variety of animals and birds like black bears, deer, crocodile, peacock etc. The aquarium is occupied with attractive and colourful varieties of fish. Dolls from different countries are displayed in the dolls museum. Indira Gandhi Park zoo has a toy train for the children, which goes around the park. There is a big tower here and from the top of it, one can get a breathtaking view of the city. Boating facilities are also provided for the tourists.
Indira Gandhi park remains open from 8 am .to 6.30pm on all days except Mondays and selected holidays. Best time to visit the park is during spring season.

PITAMAHAL DAM

Pitamahal Dam is a popular picnic spot, situated on river Brahmani, near Balanda village of Kuarmunda Tahasil in Sundargarh District which is about 22 kms from Rourkela and 16 km from Vedvyas. The dam was constructed in 1978 across river Pitamahal, a stream of river Sankha which meet river Koel upstream of Panposh to form river Brahmani.

JUBILEE PARK

Located at sector 8, about 5kms from the city center, in the middle of lush green gardens is the Jubilee Park. The park was established in the year 1987 on the Silver Jubilee celebration of Rourkela Steel Plant. Jubilee Park is a pleasant tourist spot to enjoy your leisure time. The park houses a musical fountain and for the children, there are various kinds of playing arrangements.

Nehru Traffic Park, situated at Sector-19 about 2kms from Rourkela city centre, was opened to the public in 1985. The park has a gallery for children which exhibits several items to make aware the public about traffic rules.
